Liturgical Commission: mural, Saint Dominic’s Catholic Church, Benicia CA

I’ve been getting more liturgical commissions as of late, and the end of June marked the installation of my most public sacred art project to date. I was recently commissioned by Fr Carl Schlichte O.P. pastor at Saint Dominic’s Catholic Church Benicia CA (the first Dominican Church in California) to create a painting for around the most sacred tabernacle. We developed the imagery of the ‘Descent of the Holy Spirit, surrounded by seven angels’ referring to the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, and based on the traditional style of the artist Blessed Fra Angelico. Fra Angelico was the most mportant early Renaissance sacred artist, and also a Dominican friar. In the painting the angelic cry of ‘Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus!’ is inscribed in latin around the border, and all the halos and accoutrements are leafed with 24 ct gold. It was ritually blessed on Saturday July 22, with the congregation, many Dominican friars, and the donors all in attendance.

The tabernacle is an important central element in Catholic Churches, and it is the container for the Most Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist. The Eucharist is the consecrated bread and is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ, making the tabernacle the ‘throne of Christ.’ It is an incredible honor and privilege for an artist to create a liturgical adornment for such a place.

Fr. Gregory Liu, O.P., Associate Pastor at St Dominic's Benicia, wrote, “What is the significance of depicting angels around the tabernacle?…Whenever we participate at a Mass, at every church in every part of the world, while still on Earth, we are mystically transported to heaven. We are truly in the presence of the living God, joining ranks and ranks of angels in worship. By extension, a tabernacle, in which the Blessed Sacrament is reserved and safeguarded, is none other than the throne of God, since the Blessed Sacrament is the true presence of Jesus Christ, second person of the Holy Trinity. In faith, we can understand that at every tabernacle, there are also myriads of angels worshiping Jesus Christ both day and night. May this newest adornment of our beautiful church serve to remind us, whether we are praying quietly in front of the tabernacle or worshiping God at Mass, we are never alone. Rather, we are accompanied by thousands of angels praising God in unison ”.

Exhibit: Seattle Art Fair: 2023, (Gallery Century) Lumen Field Event Center

Just returned from a great exhibit of my work in the city of Seattle, WA. The Gallery Century booth at this years’s Seattle Art Fair 2023 was perhaps the best looking booth at the event. Gallerist Evan Morganstein assembled a great collection of works by living and passed modern masters, important female artists, Pacific-coast artists, and Artists who are ready for rediscovery.

I am very blessed to be hanging my new paintings on walls alongside powerful works by many of my favorite, important visual artists such as Joan Mitchell, Mark Tobey, Sam Francis, Ronnie Landfield, Prof. Om Prakash, and David Ruth (glass sculptor).

Also showing great works by Gabor Peterdi, Ford Crull, Milton Wilson, Annelle Livingston, Sigrid Burton, Kathleen Adkison, Claude Clark, Richard Bowman, John Haley, John Chin Young, Koen Okada, Fred Mitchell, Frank Okada, Katherine Hu Fan, Charles Bunnell, Hollis Jeffcoat, Milly Ristvedt, Abie Loy Kemarre, Gloria Petyarre, and Judy Watson Napangardi.

Its been so great to meet so many art lovers, artists, collectors, and dealers here in Seattle! Thousands of people showed up and it was packed. I was blessed to be able to exhibit several works of my modern contemporary abstract art on two big walls at this group exhibit.

  • First Semester of Graduate School finished

I am so happy to have been accepted as a Special student, and now completed my first semester course of study at the wonderful Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, located in Berkeley CA. Run by the brilliant scholars and mendicant friars and priests of the Dominican Order of Preachers, this school is a beautiful synthesis of a rigorous philosophical program, a theological education, and a seminary. I will be working towards a degree in Theological Aesthetics over the next few years, which will aid me not only in more deeply understanding and thinking about the relationship of Truth to Beauty, but also the nature of sacred art, architecture, ritual, and religion, all things I already love and have studied all over the world. Such study will also eventually give me a credential with which to teach this subject on the university level, something I hope to do a little later on in my career.
